A crown may be recommended if:
A fractured or partially decayed tooth is more susceptible to further damage due to increased exposure to plaque bacteria, so a crown will protect your tooth from further damage or decay.
Crowns can also be used to improve the appearance of discoloured teeth or strengthen vulnerable teeth. Your dentist will discuss all of the options available to you.
If your teeth have become cracked or damaged, or there is a gap between missing teeth, then crowns and bridges are a common solution. Crowns and bridges both improve the appearance of your smile and strengthen your teeth, protecting them from further damage. The procedure is:
When carried out by experts in cosmetic dentistry in Liverpool, like our team, crowns and bridges will last for many years and get your confidence in your smile back.
Another similar option is dental veneers. You can read more about our veneers in Liverpool here, but veneers are layers of material which cover the fronts of your teeth. These are often used in cases of small chips on the teeth, discolouration, or gappy smiles. Veneers can be made out of composite material or porcelain.
All ceramic EMAX crowns
These crowns are made of a unique compressed ceramic. Advancing technology has meant that these reinforced ceramics negate the need for a metallic substructure. EMAX® crowns can be made to exactly match the appearance of your natural teeth. Due to their high strength characteristics, they can be used anywhere in the mouth.
Metal-Alloy Crowns
These crowns are made of a combination of metals. They are either gold or silver in colour.
Porcelain Crowns
These crowns are tooth coloured and made entirely of porcelain. Porcelain is relatively brittle hence, these crowns can only be used in limited cases at the front of the mouth.
Porcelain Bonded to Metal
These crowns have a metal-alloy substructure which is layered with a porcelain crown. This gives the strength of the metal crown with the tooth coloured appearance of the porcelain crown. As the ceramic has to mask the metal layer underneath, it often has an opaque appearance.

A dental bridge is a prosthetic structure that literally ‘bridges’ the gap between a missing tooth or missing teeth. A bridge replaces missing teeth by using the support of neighbouring teeth and is made from the same materials that crowns are made from. The material chosen will be dependent on your needs. It’s a really cost effective way to close unsightly gaps in your smile that might be making you feel self-conscious when you smile or talk.
If you have gaps in your teeth and don’t want to wear dentures to replace the gap, a bridge is the perfect solution. Due to the reliance on strong teeth either side, a bridge may only be used in certain situations. Your suitability will be assessed during your consultation. You will also be given the alternative treatment options as in some cases a dental implant may be a more favourable solution.
Traditional Bridges
This type of bridge uses crowns retained by existing teeth or implants placed on either side of the gap to support the bridge. This is the most common type and is typically made from porcelain bonded to a metal structure.
Cantilever Bridges
This type of bridge is only supported by a single crown or implant on one side. The supporting tooth is sometimes referred to as an abutment tooth. The placement process is shorter and more cost-effective. Cantilever bridges can be used when just one tooth is missing.
Maryland Bridges
A Maryland bridge uses metal wings on either side of the ‘pontic’ tooth to gain support for replacing the gap. The metal framework that supports the bridge is held in place by composite resin. A special light is used to cure the resin, firmly bonding the metal to the backs of the teeth so that nobody will know they’re there.
