What are dental veneers?

Veneers are a thin layer of material (often porcelain or EMAX), which cover the front surface of the tooth, because of this we often describe a veneer as like a ‘false nail’ but for the tooth. Veneers are used in Cosmetic Dentistry to improve the appearance of the teeth that show when you smile. They are made in our specially chosen dental laboratories.

Why might I need or want dental veneers?

Veneers are often used when a patient has small chips in the front teeth, discoloured teeth or a ‘gappy’ smile. Your dentist can place veneers to change the size, shape and alignment of your teeth, to design your perfect smile.

Are there any alternatives to dental veneers?

If dental veneers aren’t the right option for you, we also offer composite bonding. This is carried out by directly applying the composite resin to the tooth. Your Cosmetic Dentist will artistically recreate natural tooth anatomy to create the ideal smile. This is usually done in one appointment and requires minimal to no tooth removal. In some cases, crowns or bridges may be better suited to your needs. In certain cases, veneers can also be placed as an alternative to braces for some patients. The Process

Smile Design – An intra-oral digital scan is taken of your mouth which will enable our Cosmetic Dentist to design a ‘diagnostic wax-up’ or ‘smile design’ of your teeth. This will allow you to modify the size, shape and position of your teeth before we actually start the treatment. Only when you are happy with the design will we move on to the next stage.

Tooth Preparation – A small layer of the outer ‘shiny’ enamel of your tooth may be removed. Following tooth preparation, your Dentist will send a digital intra-oral scan or impressions to the  our dental technician to allow your bespoke veneers to be created.

Depending on your current alignment and treatment preparation, you may be fitted with temporary veneers based on your smile design and your smile will already be improved while you wait for the veneers to come back from the lab.

The Fitting – The temporary veneers are easily removed and replaced with the Porcelain or EMAX veneers. An adhesive agent is used to ‘glue’ the veneer to your tooth. Now you can enjoy your beautiful new smile and follow the care and advice from your dentist in order to maintain your treatment for many years to come.
