Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat and save an infected or damaged tooth. It involves removing the damaged nerve, cleaning and disinfecting it and then re-filling and sealing it. Common reasons for needing a root canal treatment are:
Deep decay causing nerve problems and/or infection.
A break that causes nerve damage.
An infection at the root of the tooth.
This can be diagnosed by your Dentist from your symptoms, clinical examination or from an x-ray.
Once the tooth becomes infected or results in severe pain from nerve damage, a root canal is the only option to save the tooth. Alternatively, it is also possible to extract an infected tooth and then replace it with a dental implant or denture, although it is preferable to try and save natural teeth where possible.
Is root canal treatment painful?
Don’t believe the myths! Our Dentists will ensure the affected tooth is completely numb ensuring a comfortable procedure. Most people liken it to a simple filling procedure.
How long does root canal treatment take?
Usually, a root canal treatment takes two appointments to complete. Each appointment may take up to 60 minutes depending on the tooth being treated. In complex cases it may take more than two appointments to ensure the infection/damaged nerve is fully removed.
What happens after root canal treatment?
As the center of the tooth has been removed to place the root filling, the tooth will have become weakened and will usually require a crown over the tooth. Crowns not only improve the tooth’s strength, reducing the chance of a fracture, but they also help to prevent reinfection by improving the seal and preventing bacteria from entering the tooth.
At Crosby DentalClinic our Dentists will ensure that fillings and crowns look and feel like natural teeth.
