At Crosby Dental Clinic we will do all we can to save your natural teeth. However, occasionally there may be unavoidable reasons why this is not possible, and an extraction may be required. Rest assured we will do all we can to make the process as comfortable as possible for you.
Why might you need a tooth extraction?
Most people will need a tooth taking out at some point in their lives. There are many reasons why you may need to have a tooth extracted, such as:
If a tooth is heavily decayed and beyond restoration.
Acute or chronic infections at the root of the tooth.
Advanced gum disease causing loose teeth.
Orthodontic reasons to create space for braces.
Impacted wisdom teeth that cause pain or gum issues.
Extracting teeth will always be a last resort, and we will discuss the options for replacing your missing teeth.
Types of extraction
Simple – A simple extraction is the taking out of any tooth for any of the reasons outlined above. The reason it is referred to as simple is that it will usually not involve any nerves, blood vessels or difficult root positions.
Complex – this type of extraction is the taking out of any tooth for reasons above, but the tooth has difficult root positions and extra time and treatment required to prevent destruction of surrounding area.
Surgical – A surgical extraction is carried out by a qualified oral surgeon and may mean cutting the gum to get to the tooth. This is also for more complex root structures and for teeth which are impacted (laying on their side) or fused into in the bone. Wisdom teeth are usually under this category.
Options for filling the gap
There are a variety of treatment options available depending on your circumstances, which include:
Your dentist will give you options for replacing the gap before you have your tooth extracted.
Surgical extractions for impacted wisdom teeth.
Here at Crosby Dental Practice, Peter Doyle performs all our surgical extractions. Before you book in to have your wisdom tooth removed, you will need to attend the clinic for a thorough consultation and set of x-rays, so peter can assess if you are suitable for this treatment and arrange to have it removed. Local anaesthetic will be used during your treatment to make it as comfortable as possible. Dental sedation isn’t required but some patients opt for this.
